Early Morning Rambling

I love getting up early.

Really?

No. Not really. In fact, I hate getting up early. Sleeping in is one of my favorite things to do. On any lazy Saturday morning, you’ll find me lying in bed with two dogs and a baby. Just snugglin’. It’s awesome.

But, despite my preference for snoozing in the A.M., occasionally an early morning does occur. Read: I woke up early today.

Yes, yes. The baby, who used to sleep through the night but recently has started waking up 2-3 times per night (hi, I’m sleep-deprived), got up this morning at 6am and had no interest in going back to sleep.

At first, I was irritable (especially since I had been up at 12am and 4:30am with the little man) but then a great thing happened. Sex and the City is on at 6:30am..who knew? So, I enjoyed 35 minutes of Charlotte, Samantha, Miranda, and Carrie while my tiny dude pulled on the mastiff’s face until he tuckered his little self out.

So, there I was, awake in the morning (all jazzed up from the show) with a sleeping baby. This quickly led to me sitting on my back deck with a cup of coffee, a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios, and a reader full of blogs to read. Read: This is the best Monday morning ever.

While basking in the early morning sun, sipping a cup of joe and being inspired by many lovely bloggers, I stumbled across this post: 27 Ways to be an (even) Better Person. I loved it. I really need to work on no. 9 and everyone should work on no. 16…just saying.

Thanks to that little blog and this lovely morning (and quite a bit of coffee) I’m feeling energetic, uplifted and excited for the week.

So, Happy Monday! What do you do when you find yourself with free time in the morning?

There Were Never Such Devoted Sisters

‘All kinds of weather, we stick together
The same in the rain and sun
Two different faces, but in tight places
We think and we act as one
Those who’ve seen us
Know that not a thing could come between us….’

Today is my sister, Kate’s, birthday!!! Happy Birthday, sista!

I’ve written about Kate before as someone who inspires me, but only gave you glimpse at truly marvelous person she is. Today, on her birthday, I wanted to tell you why my sister is one of the Modern Day Superhero’s I look up to.

The last year was a big one for my middle sister. She welcomed her baby boy, Paxton, into the world and started the adventure of motherhood. From my view, she’s stepped into the position of ‘Mom’ with grace, confidence, and fortitude. Her unconditional love and the amazing bond she and her little man share move me to tears.

In addition to welcoming Pax in July, Kate and her boyfriend, Clay, busily prepared for their bundle of joy for the first half of the year. Kate’s style and love for our mom’s photography has created a serene and comfortable dwelling for this new little family to call home. Becoming a home-maker and mother all at once, she welcomed her new life with love and devotion.

But these new roles haven’t changed who my sister is at her core. Making time for loved ones above all else, she balances friendship, working, and motherhood while somehow making it all seem effortless. In most of her non-existent free time, you’ll find Kate planning parties for friends, creating surprises for loved ones, and cooking up special treats for coworkers to brighten their day and ensure they know they’re a top priority in her life.

In addition, Kate works as a Natural & Organics food broker. It’s a very demanding job but it fits nicely with her healthy lifestyle of pesca-vegetarianism. She is strong-willed and rooted in her values; always ready to fight for what she believes in while remaining respectful of other opinions.

And you can’t talk about my sister without mentioning her unique style. Inspired daily by fashion icons, MK and Ashley, her look combined with a gorgeous smile, big blue eyes, and great hair rises envy in even the most fashionable of women.

My sister is the true definition of ‘beautiful inside and out’. Her big heart, loving spirit, and strong beliefs are matched by her sparkling eyes, perfect skin, and radiant presence. I truly admire my sister and all she’s accomplished in the last year and every year before that.

I wish you a wonderful birthday, Kate! Thank you for being such a beautiful person, inspiring mother, and dear friend. I love you!

Feeling Inspired

Today, I was lucky enough to attend an event honoring the Northern Colorado Women of Distinction. Thanks to a friend at the Poudre Valley Health System Foundation (the keynote sponsor), I enjoyed breakfast with several hundred people to honor eleven amazing women.

The Women of Distinction Award is given women who have given their time and talent to make our region a community of excellence. The awards are given in several categories including Nonprofit – Human Services, Exceptional Volunteer, Business and Business Services, and Education (to name a few).

The event was fantastic! Not only was it nice to meet a few new people (I didn’t know anyone I sat with…totally out of my comfort zone but so worth it!), each of the award recipients shared a story about what inspires them. To hear eleven talented, motivated, strong, and hard-working women share what inspires them was truly uplifting and motivating. I left the event determined to make an impact in the world – what that impact is, I’m not sure, but determined I am!

I’m so thankful to be able to witness and be apart of the vitality, strength, and power of women in the Northern Colorado community. I took so much away from the speakers who shared quotes, beautiful stories of companionship & sisterhood, and personal battles. Their incredible victories over cancer, losing family members to addiction, and being some of the first women in their fields left me awestruck. Of course, my new personal hero is the woman who somehow managed to mention Christmas three times during her speech and slipped in the little fact that she puts up thirteen Christmas trees every year. I was impressed on so many levels.

All in all, my favorite bit of advice shared this morning is the quote below. So, go on! Get out there! Do something scary and exciting and inspiring! One day we’ll be honoring you….

No Excuse

Don’t tell me
you are not inspired.

That is no excuse.

Creativity doesn’t land;
it is earned.

So wrench your eyelids open
cackle at the keyboard
stomp your feet

and
force
the
words
together.

You feel like you’re piling
stone upon stone
making nothing but an ugly
mountain of rock

but

from the top of it
at the end of a sweaty hour
suddenly a staggering view
a gift
a story unravels
for you
but not of you.

Write fast
creativity is not yours
to waste.

Today is definitely not feeling like a Tuesday (hence the absence of Tasty Tuesday). I’m suffering from a dreadful case of the Mondays.    ….Anyone? Crickets? Been done, no longer funny.

Sometimes, I (clearly) need a little inspiration to kick off the week. Thank goodness for poetry blogs and motivational quotes. How do you get inspired?

Who Inspires You?

Today’s 30 Day Blog Challenge asks us to post a picture of the person who inspires you. I considered many people who have mentored, guided, protected, and helped me along the way, but it came down to two ladies that I am in constant awe of: Jesse & Kate.

Jesse

My dear friend is the epitome of the WAHM (Work-At-Home-Mom). Raising two children with her spouse, she is a full-time mom who not only is a Marketing Manager for two firms but is a very successful family Photographer as well. She chairs an incredible event, Wyoming Art for the Cure, and manages to balance all of this with a smile. Her seemingly limitless levels of creativity, zest for trying new things, and impossible accomplishment of literally every task she sets out to do inspires me daily to try harder to be a well-rounded person, be kind, and enjoy life.

Kate

My wonderful sista. Expecting her first son this summer, Kate is also a marvel of a modern woman. As a Natural & Organics Foods Broker by day and Financial Advisory student by night, she somehow never seems to tire. Committed to healthy living, she embraces running and yoga along with a natural, eco-friendly diet and lifestyle. Grounded in her beliefs, she is a strong and independent woman who always puts family first. And her charm, flair for fashion, and ability to make any situation fun naturally attracts people to her. She inspires me to always put my best face forward, make fun a priority, and of course, eat my veggies. Follow @kate_lindsey on Twitter.
